Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’ hits Spotify

Just a decade later.

Up until recently, there’s been an evident void in Spotify’s offerings of Radiohead. Both 2007’s In Rainbows and the band’s 2016 LP, A Moon Shaped Pool, were missing from the streaming platform despite being available on rival services like Apple Music and Google’s Play Music.

Undoubtedly, the decision was tied to Thom Yorke’s belief that Spotify was not fairly compensating artists.

In 2013, the Radiohead frontman publicly came out against the platform, calling it the “the last desperate fart of a dying corpse” and “gatekeepers” of music. As such, Yorke pulled his own solo catalog from Spotify in addition to withholding the self-released In Rainbows.

“I feel like as musicians we need to fight the Spotify thing,” Yorke said at the time. “We don’t need you to do it. No artists need you to do it. We can build the shit ourselves, so fuck off … To me this isn’t the mainstream, this is is like the last fart, the last desperate fart of a dying corpse. What happens next is the important part.”

Which brings us to today’s surprise development: In Rainbows is now available to stream on Spotify.

No, really:

A Moon Shaped Pool is now also available on the service from June 17th.

It’s unclear the reasons for Radiohead’s change of heart, especially since one of the band’s main points of contention — Spotify’s freemium service — remains an option.

According to Music Ally, Spotify even had the opportunity to stream A Moon Shaped Pool upon its initial release last month, but only if the platform agreed to not make it available to users of its free service. Spotify ultimately decided to pass. “Some of the approaches we explored with Radiohead were new, and we ultimately decided that we couldn’t deliver on those approaches technologically in time for the album’s release schedule,” Spotify spokesman Jonathan Prince said in a statement.

It is worth noting that Radiohead recently acquired the rights to its entire discography, and pulled the deluxe editions of their first six albums from Spotify. What’s more, Yorke’s solo discography remains unavailable.
