Back to School Tech : 2015 Guide

What, August already? Must be time to start gathering school supplies.

These days, of course, that doesn’t mean just the notebooks, pencils and other analog tools you’ll find at the local shops – it means digital technology of all sorts.

For that reason, every August we track down a selection of such tools to help with studying, communicating and other demands of student life.

Here you’ll find everything from tiny but powerful Bluetooth earphones to a handy portable charger. This gear can help get students get to the head of the class.

As ever, we keep the demands of the student budget in mind.

Samsung M3 1TB USB 3.0 Slimline Portable Hard Drive (£41.96)710owt0nePL._SL1121_

Four years is a long time in computer years, especially for a computer used in a dorm or classroom environment. Sooner or later something bad will happen, like your laptop crashing a week before exams. Having an emergency backup is just one of the reasons any student needs a high-capacity external hard drive, and we like the Samsung M3 1TB USB 3.0 Slimline Portable Hard Drive.

Weighing at 259g, the M3 operates at 7200 rpm, the same speed as an internal drive and 23% faster than the typical 5400 rpm portable drive. Between that and its USB 3.0 compatibility, it can keep up with the demands of modern computers.

The sturdy drive is available in a variety of capacities (500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 4TB). We recommend the 1TB M3 for all of your files.

Epson Expression Home XP-322 All-in-One Printer (£44.97)

If you’re constantly rushing to the computer lab to print homework just minutes before class, you should consider buying a printer. There are a ton of affordable options on the market, but the Epson Expression Home springs out to us by being a multi-printer and boasting WiFi connect.

Manufacturers like Canon, Epson and HP make capable budget devices that produce stellar images at fast speeds. You can print via Wi-Fi or the cloud without the need to be in the same room as the printer.

Setup takes 5 minutes and you can start printing selfies instantly!

Sony SBH20 Stereo Bluetooth Wireless Headset (£15.99)

51J2zA8SJrL._SL1000_An unconventional educational tool to be sure, a good pair of headphones can be invaluable to students in a number of ways, from blocking out distractions in the library to helping to clear an algebra-garbed mind. With eight hours of stream time, these £16 wireless earbuds can outlast any study session, and with Bluetooth 3.0, you can wander up to 30 feet from your music player, if pacing helps you think.

The low-profile headphones are also a better choice for students than big over-the-ear cans because they take up less space in a backpack. It even includes an FM radio and NFC compatibility.

EasyAcc Classic 10000mAh Power Bank (£14.99)

51T05KOWCNL._SL1000_There is literally nothing worse than having your phone go dead halfway through your day and not having any way to charge it, leaving you with nothing to do but pay attention to the class. The EasyAcc Classic 10000mAh Power Bank  puts a 10,000mAh backup battery in your backpack that will give you a boost of up to 12 hours when your phone starts to fade. The charger sports two outputs and comes in a plethora of different colour variants – so pick your fancy.

Transcend JetFlash 710S 16 GB USB 3.0 Metallic Flash Drive (£8.99)

51kWabEd82L._SL1333_

The JetFlash 710S is a tiny, low-cost, large-capacity flash drive. The metal case (available in silver or gold) keeps it resistant to dust and water while making it look cool, and a slot in the case lets you attach it to your key ring. That gives you a flash drive with you at all times, if you want to carry it; but it’s also so tiny that you can leave it plugged into your laptop or USB-equipped car stereo without having it stick out and get in the way. You do have to be careful, though, because it can get hot.

It comes in capacities from 8 to 64GB (64GB in something less than an inch long!). At the time of writing, on Amazon they’re priced from £18.99 for 16GB up to £25.43 for 64GB.
